Adventures With Maple Water

By Joe Stefanko

Our resident culinary innovator is back! Kind of like a Bake Off showstopper challenge, we gave Joe a mystery ingredient with no parameters to see what he would create. The ingredient: maple water from DRINKmaple. If you haven't heard of the latest beverage for refueling after exercise yet, let us introduce you. Maple water comes straight from the maple tree with nothing added. It has half the sugar of coconut water and is also high in manganese, a powerful antioxidant that could help with thyroid health and blood sugar control. Joe came up with these two show-stopping recipes for detoxing and retoxing during London Fashion Week.

The Detox: Acai Bowl

Acai bowls remind me of California (where I'm from), where they are a common item on healthy breakfast menus. Knowing that London Fashion Week was going to call for long days with little time to properly eat between shows, I created this acai bowl with maple water to keep hydrated and energized throughout the day.

Blend

  • 2 frozen acai berry sachets
  • Half a box of maple water (approx 1 cup)
  • 1.5 bananas
  • Splash of apple juice
  • Squeeze of lemon

In a bowl, pour a handful of granola. After blending, pour the mixture in bowl. Tip: don't over-blend or your bowl will be too liquidy.

Top with

  • 1 cup sugar free granola
  • 1 sliced banana
  • Handful of sliced strawberries
  • Handful of blueberries
  • Sprinkle of goji berries
  • Sprinkle toasted coconut
  • Drizzle with honey
  • Garnish with basil
acai ingredients

The Retox: Adult Smoothie

This smoothie will refresh and relax you after a long day, whether you've been Fashion Weeking or not. The maple water adds hydration, the fruit adds sweetness, and the rum adds a little kick. Put your feet up, sip this smoothie, and unwind!

smoothies in a glass

You need:

  • 1 ripe mango
  • 2 white peaches
  • 1 box of maple water (250ml)
  • 65 ml of white rum
  • 50 ml of Malibu rum
  • generous splash of Crème de Framboise
  • Handful of ice

smoothie

Peel and pit mango. Slice and pit peaches (no need to peel). Blend all ingredients until fully smooth. Quick tip: for a cocktail (instead of a smoothie) switch the fruit for fruit juice, and shake instead of blend.
